The
Long Island Museum (Stony Brook NY) is currently exhibiting two glass
shows, one entitled "Form and Fire: New Directions in Glass" featuring
eight contemporary artists including two stained glass artists I've been
following for some time (Joseph Cavalieri and Judith Schaechter). The
other entitled "Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light" featuring beautifully detailed lamps, as well as glass portraits and landscapes.
Seeing
these pieces in person allows you to better understand modern technique
and methods used. Joseph Cavalieri's technique involves painting,
airbrushing and/or screen printing on glass. Judith Schaecter's method
includes using flash glass, sandblasting, and layering before foiling.
